First year college students who have experienced homelessness & foster care receive unexpected love and support on move-in day.
What do we provide? 100 of each:
Sheets, blankets, pillow, mattress pad, bath towels
Laundry Bag, Laundry Detergent, Hangers
Power strip, Lamp, and Fan (most dorms have no AC)
Shower Caddy and Toiletries: Soap & Soap Case, Shampoo & Conditioner, Toothpaste, Toothbrush & Cover, Razors, Shaving Cream, Tampons, Pads, Panty liners, Deodorant, Advil, Chapstick, Cold Medicine, Bandaids, Face Wipes, Purell
UCLA baseball hat, T-shirt, blanket, travel mug
Notebooks, Pens, Pencils, Highlighters
Food gift cards (the kids run out of cafeteria 'swipes' during vacations)
Wall decals for decorating their dorm room
Note on Donations: It costs >$500 per student just for the very basics!
Crowd funding sites take 7-9%. We are volunteers who are aggregating and matching donations, and making sure every penny goes directly to buying essentials. UCLA Bruin Guardian Scholars Program serves 140 current and former Foster youth who attend UCLA. These students have overcome barriers such as homelessness, family mental health issues, and abuse throughout their lives and are extremely resilient. This program builds a community of peers who have faced similar challenges in life.
