Hello Volunteers,

We are so excited and grateful for your willingness  to support the UCLA Bruin Guardian Scholars Program New Student Move In event on Friday September 21st and Saturday September 22nd! The BGS Program currently serves 138 undergraduate and graduate current/former foster youth. This year we will be welcoming an incoming class of 100 first year and transfer foster youth! As we gear up for this weekend we thought it would be important to provide a few tips as well as information about the foster youth community. Many of our students have experienced significant trauma in the past and we want to ensure that we are mindful and aware of this during our interactions. If you have any questions in regards to any of these areas please feel free to reach out to myself or the Program Coordinator, Jessica Rivera (Jrivera@saonet.ucla.edu).  Also below is information regarding parking as well as the location for the event. Please see the attached map for a visual representation.

Some friendly tips to keep in mind when engaging with the students….

DO’s

-Politely introduce yourself to the students

-Be attentive to student’s needs and offer support if appropriate

-Please create a warm and friendly environment for the students

-Please be aware that it may take the students time to warm up to you during conversation because they may be nervous or feel guarded

-Use positive and uplifting language

-When appropriate praise student’s for their acceptance into UCLA and wish them well as they pursue their academic endeavors

-Ask about the students major and any possible organizations they may be interested in joining; discuss their future goals and aspirations

DON’T

-Please do not ask students why they were in foster care or about their previous experiences in foster care (This could be triggering and make the student feel uncomfortable)

-Please don’t ask the students about their biological parents or their relationship with them

-Please do not take it personal if student’s appear hesitant to accept assistance. Many of our students will be nervous and anxious about their transition to UCLA and about engaging with individuals they don’t know.

-Please be aware that many of the students may have family members or friends with them when they arrive at the event. Some of our students may have supportive individuals in their lives to help them move in while others may come alone.

Thank you so much for taking the time to support our students!
